Thakeham’s origin can be attributed directly to our specific location near Storrington, West Sussex. Situated on a greensand ridge in the lee of the South Downs the ready supply of local raw materials encouraged the manufacture of handmade concrete roofing tiles on this site as far back as the 1920’s.

The manufacture of tiles of quality calls for exceptional skill, suitable raw materials and a wide experience of building requirements, and nowhere are these factors combined more successfully than in the production of the Thakeham Roofing Tile, which is manufactured only by Frank Knight of The Thakeham Tile Works, Heath Common, Storrington, Sussex.Mr. Knight, is not devoting his time solely to the production of good roof tiles, he is just putting on the market, a building brick of similar quality to the tiles and which it is anticipated will be equally successful. |
Thakeham Tiles Ltd was incorporated in 1933 by Mr A L King when he purchased the operation from Mr Knight. After a brief occupation of the site by the Canadian forces during the war, business quickly resumed. During the post war years building blocks and decorative products were introduced and by the mid 1950’s hand made roofing tiles were no longer made.
